The Uzbekistan Small Hydropower Development Project is a major national initiative to develop renewable energy sources in the Republic of Uzbekistan, implemented with the support of the World Bank. The project aims to meet the electricity needs of rural and remote areas of the country, increase the reliability of energy supply, and ensure environmental sustainability.
The project envisages the deployment of small and micro hydroelectric power plants (SHPs) mainly on existing irrigation canals. This approach does not require the construction of new large infrastructure, allows for efficient use of land and water resources, and minimizes environmental impact.
The project is also designed in line with the development strategy of the Republic of Uzbekistan “Uzbekistan – 2030”, state policy on the expansion of renewable energy sources, and international climate initiatives. The project serves long-term goals aimed at forming a stable market in the small hydropower sector, creating new jobs, and stimulating local economic development.
